Chapter 10

Iolani

Aven Roberts was not the prissy little daddy’s boy hostage I had been expecting. And his dad sounded like even more of an asshole than I thought. But in the end, this was better. I think. At least one good thing would come of this whole mess—that poor, determined young man would be able to escape his controlling, mentally and physically abusive father. I’d hide him so well even magic couldn’t find him.

Gods, people were assholes sometimes.

I’d have to contact Wesson and let her and the rogue EPA people know about the little change to our plan, and hash out all the details. But right now, none of that mattered. One of my mates needed, me—whether he’d admit it or not—and the whole fucking world could burn before I left him to deal with his darkness alone.

I had been watching Brier carefully the last couple days. Something wasn’t right with my broody emo goblin.

Maybe it was just being so far away from his sanctuary and out of his element. Maybe it was that whole bullshit interaction with my dad—who I still planned to choke unconscious next time I saw him, by the way. But something told me it was more than that.

When we got back to my parents’ house, I made my excuses to the others and slipped away. They all shared a look as they headed toward my room. Sure, I had fully intended to use Brier and his clan to intimidate information out of the pretty boy CFO. I wouldn’t really have let him do true harm, and Brier knew that. It was good for him to have a little time off his leash. But I don’t think I was the only one who had noticed that Brier was even more...gobliny...than usual tonight.

I knew I was right when Zuberi fell behind the others, pausing to grab my arm before I could turn away toward Brier’s borrowed room. “Be careful,” the unicorn said softly, his deep voice a serious rumble, meant for my ears only.

I met his mismatched blue and brown eyes and laid a hand over his, where it rested on my arm. “Aww...that’s sweet. You think sweet lil ol’ me can’t handle one tiny ball of goblin rage?” I batted my eyelashes at him for effect.

He snorted. “I think not-so-sweet, not-so-little old you is about to get her ass handed to her. He’s not okay, Io. Not even a little.”

I let out a sigh and glanced down the hall, where Brier had silently disappeared into his room. “I know.” Looking up at Zuberi, I arched a brow. “Any idea what’s wrong with him? Give a girl a clue.”

Zuberi’s eyes shimmered a bit, as if he was about to call on his powers. But in the end, he stayed in his purely human form. Yeah. It didn’t take unicorn powers of observation. “Boss has always hated what he is,” he said sadly. “But this is something else. His soul energy is...off. Kind of churned up and muted all at the same time.
